Arthritis is the swelling of one’s joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis which cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the joints and that list continues to grow.
Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in N. America along with illnesses such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Almost everyone over 60 years old has some form of arthritis, however the symptoms may be so mild and would only detectible by X-ray.
The 2 major types of arthritis are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and is the result of daily wear and tear of the joints from aging. The once-smooth sliding surface of our weight bearing joints such as the back, hip, knee, spine become rough resulting in friction and ultimately pain. Initially, the condition may start with a minor dull pain–similar to a toothache–while walking but soon the pain may eventually worsen and become continuous and even debilitating.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is thought to be an Autoimmune Disease where for some unknown reason, the body’s own immune system begins to attack body tissues. This often results in damage to the finger, wrist, elbow joint linings and cartilages which lead to swelling, stiffness, pain and even deformity.
