Pain Management

Pain is a symptom from a variety of causes such as injury, disease, and strenuous activity. Pain is a message sent by the body to the brain from the affected area but pain can affect the entire body and mind.

Pain is classified into two categories: chronic and acute.

Chronic Pain is pain which persists and lasts for weeks, months and even years. There may have been an initial incident – a fall, sprain, infection, or there may be an ongoing cause of pain such as arthritis, cancer but some people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of body damage. Many chronic pain conditions affect older adults. Common chronic pain complaints include headache, lower back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain, neurogenic pain (pain resulting from damage to the peripheral nerves or to the central nervous system itself), psychogenic pain (pain not due to past disease or injury or any visible sign of damage inside or outside the nervous system). Untreated, chronic pain can disturb appetite, sleep, energy, focus and can also lead to other debilitating conditions.

Acute Pain is usually associated with an injury, accident, or acute illness. This kind of pain usually elicits a response from the sympathetic nervous system, such as sweating, accelerated heartbeat, raised blood pressure, quickened breathing, and so on. The pain is a message from your body to pay attention and get treatment.

Treatment: Therapies to treat pain can be grouped into chemical and non-chemical treatments. Generally speaking, a painkiller is a chemical treatment. The underlying condition causing the pain continues, but the pain is not felt. Some chemical painkillers may produce side effects, such as ulcers, liver, and kidney problems and increasing tolerance leading to long-trm addictions.

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine offers non-chemical relief for pain without adverse side effects. Studies show that acupuncture stimulates the production of endorphins (the body’s own natural painkillers) that brings about balance, pain relief and support for the body’s natural healing process.

Acupuncture stimulates blood circulation, frees and soothes energy channels, and transforms the condition of stasis found in bruises, muscle pain, spasms, and swollen vessels.

Acupuncture offers a safe, natural, effective treatment for treating the root causes of acute and chronic pain.
